Survey: Growing Distrust in Big Tech AI - Unprecedented Trust in Open Source & Decentralized LLMs
Majority trust AI more than traditional news, social media, or friends and family
LISBON, PORTUGAL / ACCESS Newswire / April 29, 2025 / BitSeek, the developer of the world's first full-stack decentralized LLM (DeLLM) infrastructure for Web3 AI, today released findings from a new survey that reveal significant distrust in Big Tech's control of artificial intelligence. The survey of 1000 AI users highlights an increase in support for open, decentralized, privacy-focused systems.

Among the findings:
80% prefer an open-source LLM over a centralized model developed by a major tech company.
78% would choose an AI that does not analyze or store their conversation data, reflecting increasing concerns over privacy and surveillance.
71% now trust AI-generated content more than traditional sources, including social media, search engines, friends and family, and legacy news outlets.
"This survey confirms what we've long believed-people want AI that serves them, not systems that mine and monetize their data," said Chris Coverdale, CEO of BitSeek. "The future of AI will not be built behind closed doors. It will be decentralized, open-source, and aligned with user interests."
Despite being skeptical of Big Tech, respondents have trust in the decision making capabilities of AI. An overwhelming 94% said they would be comfortable with AI making decisions for their town or city, signaling a historic level of trust in machine-led governance. That trust also extended to high-stakes personal domains: among expert AI users, 57% would trust AI to make decisions about their finances, 52% would do the same for their healthcare, and 43% would trust AI to handle legal issues.

Survey respondents also weighed in on the pace of AI advancement, with 70% predicting that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will emerge within five years-a timeline that underscores the urgency of building transparent and accountable infrastructure now. This belief rises to 79% among AI experts, compared to 59% among general respondents-suggesting that those closest to the technology are even more convinced of AGI's imminent arrival.
"These numbers tell a story we can't ignore," Coverdale said. "People are ready for AI to play a bigger role in society-but they want that role to be free from corporate control. At BitSeek, we're building the infrastructure to make that possible."
BitSeek's decentralized architecture atomizes and distributes open-source LLMs across a global network of independent nodes, ensuring that no single server-or company-ever owns or sees an entire model or user conversation. Users retain ownership of their data and may choose to participate in token-based community ecosystems that reward contributions.
