Dawn of War 4 developers chose Adeptus Mechanicus for tactical variety
King Art selected the Adeptus Mechanicus as the fourth playable faction in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 after considering alternatives including the Death Guard.
Creative director Jan Theysen said the studio decided early that the real-time strategy game should centre on distinct faction campaigns. Space Marines, Orks and Necrons were chosen alongside the Adeptus Mechanicus, which has not previously been a playable Dawn of War faction.
The team considered the Death Guard but judged that its battlefield role overlapped too closely with other armies already in the game. The Adeptus Mechanicus offered a different mechanical identity and occupies a major place in Warhammer lore despite its absence from earlier entries.
Theysen said the project aims to deliver a modern interpretation of the original Dawn of War. The return of the Orks and character Gorgutz, together with the inclusion of Necrons, reflects that approach.
