Coin Press - New Jersey Man Faces Federal Charges After Authorities Seize 109 Homemade Bombs

A New Jersey man is facing federal explosives charges after authorities said a search of his Denville property uncovered a sophisticated home laboratory, explosive-making materials and 109 homemade bombs.

Joseph Rizos, 37, is accused of acquiring explosive materials and equipment over a period beginning in April 2020. Federal authorities allege that he obtained chemicals, fuels, fuses and laboratory supplies from online sellers and stored materials illegally at his residence.

Investigators searched the home on June 24. Authorities said they discovered equipment and substances associated with the manufacture of homemade explosives in several parts of the property.

The largest discovery was in a shed, where investigators recovered 109 homemade explosive devices, according to federal allegations. Additional materials were reported in the bedroom, basement and garage.

Authorities also seized blasting caps, cell phones, firearms and ammunition. Because of the potential danger presented by the materials, nearby homes were temporarily evacuated while law enforcement personnel secured the property.

Rizos initially faced charges brought in Morris County connected to possession of destructive devices and allegations that the devices endangered others. The case has since expanded to the federal level.

Federal prosecutors have charged him with three counts involving unlawful receipt and storage of explosive materials and possession of plastic explosives without required detection agents.

If convicted on the federal charges, Rizos could face a combined sentence exceeding 20 years in prison as well as fines totaling as much as $600,000. Any sentence would ultimately be determined through the federal court process.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local law enforcement.

The charges are allegations, and Rizos is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until guilt is established in court.
