Three Students Die, Four Injured in Madurantakam Car Crash

A rear-tyre failure caused a car carrying seven Vels College students to overturn on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway as they returned from Puducherry.

Three college students were killed and four others seriously injured when their car overturned near Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district on the night of Friday, August 28. All seven occupants were students of Vels College in Chennai who were returning from a visit to Puducherry.

Police said the vehicle was traveling on the Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway when a rear tyre suddenly burst. The driver lost control, and the car crossed part of the roadway before overturning. Every person inside sustained serious injuries.

Police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel responded after receiving information about the crash. They removed the students from the damaged vehicle and transported them to government hospitals in Chengalpattu and Madurantakam.

The dead were identified as Deepak Raj, 19, from Vadalur in Cuddalore district; Puyuterin Staniko, 22, from Vilavancode in Kanyakumari district; and Raj Prasad, 19, from Pasupathipalayam in Karur district. The four surviving students remained under treatment.

The overturned car and emergency response caused heavy congestion along the national highway. Police officers managed vehicles around the scene until the damaged car could be cleared and normal traffic restored.

Madurantakam police registered a case and opened an investigation. Investigators were examining the tyre failure, the driver’s loss of control and the sequence in which the vehicle veered and overturned.
